Maoji

Everybody talks about Maoji nowdays. I went there several times and I love it. So I decided to talk with Angela (owner of the restaurant) about this incredible place. Placed at Piazza Aspromonte 43, Milan, Maoji opened in 2016 for the first time. After a huge renovation work, it reopened in 2017.

Angela tells me that it is the second restaurant she works. In fact, there is another chinese restaurant not too far from there: Mao Hunan (Via Nicola Antonio Porpora 5, Milan). She explains that when they opened Mao Hunan they wanted to recreate a typical restaurant of that region for an Asian clientele. So, she was very surprised when Mao Hunan became very famous between Italian people. Hunan, a mountainous province in southern China, is the birthplace of communist leader Mao Zedong. To him were devoted several dishes: in fact, at Maoji you can try Mao pork belly — one of the best choice of the menu. Maoji is quite different from the previous one. Vibrant, funny, full of visual stimuli and not only, laden with nostalgia, it is the perfect place for the new generations. Angela wanted to recreate a very famous Chinese formula, the street food. According to her, it is very common in China to stop at a stand while shopping and eat something fast. So, during the renovation, she wanted to recreate a real Chinese street with balconies, flyers, showcases and posters. The result is nothing short of astonishing!

Always moved by the same fears, that a type of cuisine so specific cannot meet the taste of all, Angela explains that the vast menu surprises the Italians and satisfied everyone. In fact, there is an embarrassment of choice. Among the many proposals, served in dishes with representations of symbols of the party, stand out the home-made dumplings, noodles with or without broth, delicious spicy vegetables, bao and baozi, wanton. These are dishes that are very unlikely to be found in the common Chinese restaurants. And to drink, in addition to different types of teas (even homemade), there is the bubble tea. Perfect with good company, sitting on the stools. With friends between chatter and laughter.
